Pain, trauma, compassion and our opioid crisis

Managing chronic pain and the right time, if ever, to prescribe opioids is a complicated issue – especially given its risk for addiction and for people already in recovery from addiction. Sometimes, too, patients can confuse emotional and physical pain. Understand different types of pain and how to treat them.

Learning objectives: At the end of this presentation, delegates will be able to:

>  Identify two causes of pain that do not involve tissue pathology
>  Describe evidence for effectiveness of trauma treatment as chronic pain therapy
>  Describe methods to distinguish chemical coping from use disorder, and the implications of knowing the difference.
